Microsoft recently unveiled its new Windows RT and Windows 8 Pro Surface tablets during a press event in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, everyone walked away without any idea as to how much the tablets are going to cost. A number of analysts pegged a $600 starting price range and nowTNW says it has learned from sources that the Windows RT Surface tablet will indeed start at $599; the Windows 8 Pro models will begin at $999.
$600 is certainly a steep starting price for the Windows RT tablet, especially if Microsoft wants to cut into Apple’s market share. We think a lower price point might actually be a better way to do that — especially since consumers won’t have as large of an app selection with Windows RT. We’re not surprised by the $1,000 starting point for the Windows 8 Pro Surface tablets given the more powerful Intel processors, however. Hopefully we hear a final pricing confirmation from Microsoft in the coming weeks.
